LOFAR/LOIS - A wide area sensor network in Europe for Earth and space
observation
Originally concieved as the world's first and largest telscope based on
the digital probing and sampling of radio signals from space in both
time and space, the LOFAR project soon turned into a more generic Wide
Area Sensor Network of continental dimensions. The Scandinavian
contribution LOIS, located in southern Sweden with Växjö as hub, will
provide space physics capabilities, in particular the study and possible
forecasting of space weather storms and other natural hazards.
With tens of thousands of digital sensors distributed over many hundreds
of kilometres and a data network that will be able to handle an
aggregate data flow of several tens of Terabits per second, the
constructioon of the LOFAR/LOIS "sensor web" is a major system design
and optimisation challenge.
